Michael Coats Jr. made his NFL debut count. The Cleveland Browns cornerback, signed as an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia on May 11, 2026, recorded an interception against the Chicago Bears in the teams' preseason opener on Aug. 15.
Coats Jr.'s path to that moment is one of the stranger backstories in this year's draft class. Born June 20, 2001, in Biloxi, Mississippi, he never played a single high school sport at Biloxi High School. After graduation, he worked at an arcade. He only discovered football was a realistic option when he spotted a flyer advertising tryouts at East Central Community College — walked on, made the team, and built a career from scratch.
He spent three seasons at East Central from 2020 to 2022, appearing in 21 games and recording 38 tackles, five sacks, 19 pass deflections and four interceptions. Those numbers drew enough attention to put him in the NCAA transfer portal after the 2022 season.
Coats Jr. landed with the Nevada Wolf Pack for 2023, a step up to the Mountain West Conference. In 10 games that year he recorded 13 tackles, four pass deflections and an interception — solid but not yet the player who would draw professional interest.
The 2024 season changed the picture. Coats Jr. posted 17 pass deflections and four interceptions for Nevada, earning first-team all-Mountain West honors. That production gave him a recognizable name heading into the offseason, and he re-entered the transfer portal.
He finished his college career at West Virginia in the Big 12, a final audition against Power Four competition before the draft. In the 2025 season he finished with 30 tackles — two for a loss — seven pass deflections and a forced fumble. The numbers were respectable but not flashy enough to earn a draft selection in April 2026.
The Browns signed him May 11, 2026, giving him a shot at the 53-man roster through the preseason. The game against Chicago was the first real live test, and Coats Jr. delivered the kind of play that gets a practice-squad candidate on the coaching staff's radar: a read on the quarterback's eyes and a clean interception.
For Cleveland, the deeper context matters. The Browns' preseason opener also featured first-round rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders making his professional debut against Chicago. Coats Jr.'s interception is exactly the type of play that can earn an undrafted corner a roster spot — a defense making life difficult for the other team's backups while the starters rotate in and out.
Coats Jr.'s college career tells the story of a late develo 21 games and four interceptions at the junior college level, one interception in 10 games at Nevada in 2023, four interceptions in his all-conference breakout in 2024, and the move to West Virginia to prove he could compete at the highest college level. The forced fumble in 2025 added another dimension to his résumé.
The Browns signed him as one of multiple undrafted free agents competing for depth at cornerback. Whether the interception translates to a roster spot depends on three more preseason weeks, but a pick in your first NFL action is the right kind of first impression.
