Wirecutter's 2024 review assessed 40 nursing bra models, narrowing the field to 17 finalists for extensive testing — building on evaluations the publication has conducted since 2017.
The review focused on how bras accommodate fluctuating cup sizes and address common issues such as skin irritation.
A panel of 12 nursing mothers wore, nursed in and washed the bras daily for more than six months. Participants ranged in bra size from 32A to 38G.
Testers evaluated how easily a bra could be unclipped or adjusted for feeding, its breathability and softness, and whether it was comfortable enough to wear for 10 or more hours daily, including during sleep. Reviewers also assessed how well bras supported heavier breasts once milk production began, how the fit adapted as cup sizes decreased, and how easily the garments could be washed.
Five models received top recommendations: a fuller-coverage bra designed for a wide size range, a structured seamless option suitable for professional settings, a consistent performer fitting B to H cups, a supportive bralette and a sleep bra.
The wireless Kindred Bravely Every Stage Nursing Bra was the most favored among testers. Panelists said it offered consistent support throughout pregnancy and all stages of breastfeeding, with some saying they wanted to keep wearing it after weaning.
One panelist, who typically wears a D cup and tested a size large, said she reached for the Kindred Bravely bra most often. Another said it was comfortable enough to sleep in.
The bra is made from 92 percent modal jersey, a fabric derived from beech trees valued for its softness and breathability — qualities testers said were especially welcome during the early weeks of nursing.
Other publications have recommended brands including Hatch, Momcozy, Bodily and Storq. Experts consulted across those reviews included lactation consultants, an intimate wear company founder, a stylist, a doula and representatives from breastfeeding organizations including La Leche League. They highlighted closure types, nursing access, coverage, size inclusivity, material and pad types as key considerations.
