A report investigating digital rights violations claims Meta Platforms Inc. has systematically suppressed Palestinian voices on its social media platforms. The study, titled "The Platformicide of Palestine 2021–2025," analyzed more than 3,500 verified cases of content removal and account suspensions.

The report, a collaboration between 7amleh, the Arab Centre for the Advancement of Social Media, and an academic research team at Utrecht University, coined the term "platformicide" to describe the structural erasure of Palestinian digital presence, visibility and participation across social media platforms.

Jerusalem-based journalist Faten Elwan exemplifies the reported suppression. Elwan, who has over 300,000 followers on Instagram, typically sees her posts receive only a few hundred views.

Elwan's account was suspended for two months, then reactivated in April 2025. Her first story after reactivation garnered 30,000 views, but subsequent stories within an hour dropped to just a few hundred. Her account has been taken down eight times since late 2023, shortly after the start of Israel's assault on Gaza.

She believes Meta has "shadow-banned" her, a method that limits content visibility without outright blocking it. Elwan said her followers report they cannot find her unless they specifically search for her name. "I no longer exist," she said.

Elwan met with Meta representatives in May 2025 to discuss her concerns about silencing on their platforms. She said their response appeared dismissive.

"During my meeting with Meta, they heard my statement, and there was no reaction whatsoever," Elwan said. She added, "Meta is simply playing that same role, but on a global scale."

Fabio Cristiano, who led the research and analysis at Utrecht University, said the findings indicate a clear trend that cannot be dismissed as a series of errors.

Cristiano described the situation as "a structural and intentional approach, which goes beyond content moderation alone." He said Meta's alleged erasure operates through "a broader architecture of exceptional governance, combining overbroad policy application, disproportionate enforcement."

The research documented cases logged by users through 7amleh's observatory, 7or. The report covers the period between 2021 and 2025, spanning successive Israeli assaults on Gaza.
