Bitwise cut 14 percent of its workforce, dropping its headcount from 180 to 155 and eliminating roughly 25 positions across multiple departments. The move signals a recalibration of growth expectations at one of the institutional crypto sector's most prominent spot Bitcoin ETF issuers.
Bitcoin currently trades at $63,772. The price reflects a market that has failed to hold higher levels, with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index at 27—firmly in "Fear" territory. That is not a backdrop that rewards aggressive headcount. Bitwise is cutting to run lean.
On-chain data backs up the caution. Large-entity wallet flows show a marked slowdown in accumulation. Institutional-grade addresses are posting reduced net inflows compared to early 2024, and there is no conviction signal pointing to immediate upside.
The broader tension here is real: spot Bitcoin ETFs won landmark approval in Jan. 2024, but sustained capital deployment from traditional finance has been inconsistent. The ETF structure opened the door—it did not guarantee the inflows. Firms that hired aggressively into that approval are now rationalizing cost bases to match actual revenue.
Net flow reports for spot Bitcoin ETFs and quarterly results from other digital asset managers will be the next hard data points on institutional demand. A sustained break above key BTC resistance levels is what the sector needs before hiring cycles reverse.
