WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump told Axios the United States is taking a "low-key" approach with Iran, describing the standoff as a "chess game" that will ultimately resolve itself.
Trump pointed to Iran's economic difficulties as a key factor shaping the U.S. stance, citing "huge inflation" and a cash shortage in Tehran that he said is straining the diplomatic landscape.
A U.S. naval blockade continues to pressure the Iranian economy, Trump said. He said the blockade has squeezed Iran's finances to the point where it cannot pay its troops, hitting military readiness and internal stability.
Trump said the United States is "only semi-negotiating" with Iran, describing the current posture as one of observation rather than active pursuit of a nuclear deal.
He tied the U.S. approach to global oil prices. With oil trading slightly above $75 a barrel, Trump said American consumers are bearing less financial burden from the conflict.
"It will work out. It always works out," Trump said.
