Wells Fargo will roll out tokenized deposits for select corporate and commercial clients this year, starting with U.S. dollar-to-British pound transactions running around the clock on the bank's own blockchain infrastructure.

The system delivers 24/7/365 settlement, programmable payments and full parity with existing deposit protections. Payments route automatically through tokenized deposits when doing so improves speed or flexibility, without changing how clients interact with the bank.

The move puts Wells Fargo alongside JPMorgan and Citi, both of which already operate institutional tokenized deposit services and have been building blockchain settlement rails for years.

The banks are responding to stablecoins, which threaten to pull deposits away from traditional lenders. Tokenized deposits are their play to keep commercial bank money inside the established financial system.

Tokenized deposits are conventional bank balances recorded on a blockchain. Wells Fargo said these deposits will carry the same regulatory protections and deposit insurance eligibility as its current deposit products—distinguishing them from stablecoins.

Future upgrades include smart contract functionality for conditional payments, in-house custodial wallets and connections to external blockchains.

Wells Fargo will also integrate with a shared tokenized deposit network under development by The Clearing House, a consortium that includes JPMorgan, Bank of America and Citigroup.

The initial rollout expands through 2027 to cover more clients, countries and currencies. The Clearing House's shared network targets a first-half 2027 launch.

Wells Fargo has been building blockchain payment infrastructure since at least 2019, when it introduced Wells Fargo Digital Cash for internal cross-border transfers. It later settled foreign exchange transactions with HSBC on a shared blockchain.

In March, Wells Fargo filed a trademark application for WFUSD, suggesting the bank is weighing either a deposit token or a stablecoin as part of its broader digital asset push.
