LONDON — The Samaritans operates free helplines around the clock, every day of the year, for people in emotional distress. Callers in the United Kingdom can reach the service at no cost by dialing 116 123 from any phone.

In the United States, the Samaritans Helpline is available at (877) 870-4673. The service offers support in more than 240 languages through a tele-interpreter service.

The organization provides a confidential listening presence for people who are struggling, worried about someone else or simply need to talk. Callers are not judged.

Individuals can also contact Samaritans by email at jo.org. Some local branches offer in-person visits.

An online chat service is running as a pilot program, available on a limited basis during specific evenings each week.

All communications with Samaritans — by phone, email or chat — are confidential.
