Proof of reserves

Proof of reserves is a method by which a stablecoin issuer demonstrates that it holds sufficient assets to fully back all outstanding stablecoin tokens.

What it is

Proof of reserves is a broader concept than a reserve attestation, encompassing various methods for a stablecoin issuer to publicly demonstrate that its reserve assets match or exceed its circulating stablecoin supply. This can involve on-chain mechanisms, cryptographic proofs, or regular, comprehensive audits by independent third parties. The goal is to provide real-time or near real-time transparency and verifiable evidence of solvency to token holders and the broader market.

In the context of stablecoins, robust proof-of-reserves systems aim to prevent situations where an issuer might not have enough assets to cover redemptions, which could lead to a depeg. Market participants often scrutinize the frequency, independence, and depth of these proofs. Strong proof-of-reserves can increase investor confidence and reduce the risk of a bank-run scenario, influencing the stablecoin's perceived reliability and its role in the wider crypto economy.

Why it matters

Proof of reserves offers a critical insight into a stablecoin's financial health, directly impacting its ability to maintain its peg and your investment security.
