Pink sheets

An electronic quotation service that displays real-time quotes for over-the-counter (OTC) securities not listed on major exchanges.

What it is

Pink Sheets, officially known as OTC Markets Group's Pink Open Market, is a quotation service that provides trading information for stocks that do not meet the listing requirements of major exchanges like the NYSE or Nasdaq. These securities are traded over-the-counter (OTC) directly between dealers. The "pink" refers to the color of the paper on which these quotes were historically published.

Many penny stocks and foreign securities trade on Pink Sheets. Companies listed here typically have minimal reporting requirements, leading to less transparency for investors compared to exchange-listed stocks. This lack of information contributes to higher risk and volatility. Retail investors looking at Pink Sheet stocks must conduct extensive due diligence due to the limited regulatory oversight and potential for manipulation.

Why it matters

Pink Sheets list many highly speculative and risky stocks, often with minimal transparency. Understanding this platform is crucial for assessing the risks of OTC investments.
