OFAC sanctions

OFAC sanctions are economic penalties imposed by the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control against foreign countries, entities, and individuals.

What it is

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) administers and enforces economic and trade sanctions programs primarily aimed at protecting U.S. national security and foreign policy interests. These sanctions prohibit U.S. persons and entities, including financial institutions and crypto businesses, from engaging in transactions with sanctioned parties or jurisdictions. OFAC maintains various lists, such as the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list, identifying individuals and entities subject to these restrictions.

In the crypto world, OFAC sanctions mean that U.S. individuals and firms cannot transact with crypto addresses or entities linked to sanctioned individuals or countries. This has led to exchanges blocking wallets associated with sanctioned entities or freezing funds. The U.S. Treasury has also sanctioned crypto mixers like Tornado Cash, impacting privacy-focused transactions. Compliance is critical for crypto firms to avoid severe penalties and potential criminal charges.

Why it matters

OFAC sanctions can freeze or block access to funds associated with sanctioned entities, impacting crypto users and service providers.
