Crypto mixer

A crypto mixer is a service that pools and shuffles cryptocurrency transactions from many users to obscure the origin and destination of funds.

What it is

Crypto mixers, sometimes called tumblers, enhance privacy by breaking the on-chain link between a sender and receiver. They combine multiple users' funds into a large pool, then distribute equivalent amounts to the recipients from this commingled pool. This process makes it difficult to trace individual transactions on public blockchains, as the funds are mixed with others before reaching their final destination.

Mixers frequently appear in news related to illicit finance and regulatory crackdowns. Law enforcement agencies, like OFAC, have sanctioned specific mixers, such as Tornado Cash, for their role in money laundering by state-sponsored hackers and criminal organizations. Following these stories involves understanding how regulatory bodies identify and penalize entities facilitating illegal activities through anonymizing services.

Why it matters

Mixers are often associated with illicit activities, leading to regulatory scrutiny and potential sanctions that can impact the broader crypto ecosystem.
