Global tablet shipments fell 23 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of 2026, totaling 32 million units—the lowest quarterly volume in nearly three years, according to Omdia.
Apple's iPad shipments declined 27.5 percent to approximately 11.58 million units, outpacing the overall market contraction. The steeper drop underscores demand weakness even for the category leader.
Samsung, Amazon, Lenovo and Huawei also posted declines, reflecting industry-wide softness after pandemic-era device purchase surges and the arrival of longer replacement cycles.
The shipment collapse cuts directly into hardware revenue. For Apple, the challenge is more acute: the company continues investing in iPad Pro's advanced processors and displays while facing uncertain returns on those capital outlays. Stimulating demand or pulling forward upgrades has proven difficult.
Tablet makers are experimenting with software differentiation and ecosystem integration, but these efforts have not reversed the multi-year shipment decline. The segment now competes for consumer and enterprise spending against higher-growth categories—particularly AI infrastructure and data center compute, where corporate capital flows remain robust.
