OSLO — Norway's $1.6 trillion sovereign wealth fund acquired a 10 percent stake in Aypa Power for $300 million, valuing the North American battery storage platform at $3 billion.

The investment marks the fund's first direct equity bet on utility-scale battery storage. Aypa Power, a Blackstone portfolio company, operates projects across California, Texas, and the PJM interconnection region with a development pipeline spanning several gigawatts.

The valuation is significant for public market investors. At $3 billion, Aypa Power's implied valuation establishes a private market benchmark that likely exceeds what comparable public battery storage assets trade for today. NextEra Energy (NEE), which operates a substantial energy storage pipeline through NextEra Energy Resources, and Fluence Energy (FLNC), the pure-play battery storage technology provider, both appear undervalued relative to this private market signal.

The Inflation Reduction Act's investment tax credits for standalone energy storage projects have made the economics more attractive to large institutional capital. Norway's entry into the sector—not a speculative move but a conviction-level deployment by one of the world's largest investors—confirms that the policy environment and demand trajectory are sound enough to justify billion-dollar commitments.
