Mark Cuban, the entrepreneur and investor, publicly called on House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other lawmakers not to extend the Premium Tax Credit (PTC). In a post on X on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Cuban argued that the funding goes directly to insurance companies without adequately benefiting patients. He stated, "Dear, pls do not extend the PTC. That money goes directly to the big insurance companies. The law allows them to keep 15pct of the 26b as profit. But it gets worse. They can game that number with their subsidiaries. They will deny care and make patients fight to get the care they need. With or without the PTC the deductibles are unaffordable, and the max patient OOP is worse. If you can't pay the deductible, all you did is give the money for free to the insurance companies that we should break up What should we do? See my next week for some suggestions."
Cuban's warning comes as policy discussions around healthcare subsidies continue to draw scrutiny. The Premium Tax Credit is a federal subsidy designed to help individuals and families afford health insurance coverage purchased through government marketplaces. Debates often center on the effectiveness of these subsidies in controlling healthcare costs and ensuring access for consumers versus their impact on insurance industry profits.
Cuban's position implies that extending the PTC would exacerbate existing issues within the healthcare system, particularly regarding the affordability of deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums for patients. His view suggests that the current structure allows insurance companies to profit significantly from the subsidies while potentially limiting patient care. He plans to offer alternative suggestions in the coming week, indicating a continued focus on healthcare reform from his perspective.
