U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds registered $1.16 billion in net outflows across three trading sessions, with $643 million flowing out Friday, $399 million Monday and $116 million Tuesday.
Bitwise, a crypto asset manager, says the selling does not signal a structural shift in institutional sentiment. André Dragosch, Bitwise's head of research, attributed the outflows to "a short-term risk-off environment rather than a structural change in institutional sentiment."
The timing follows a $6.3 billion hack of Binance on Thursday that roiled crypto markets. Dragosch noted that the incident affected Binance's hot wallets—internet-connected storage—while institutional Bitcoin held at Coinbase custody sits in cold storage, which remains offline. The distinction matters: institutional funds face different custody infrastructure than exchange platforms vulnerable to breach.
Bitwise's survey of 15 institutions found none had reduced Bitcoin ETF exposure. U.S. regulatory filings show most institutional investor categories, excluding hedge funds, have maintained positions through volatility.
Retail investors, who make up the majority of Bitcoin ETF holdings, drove the outflows. These participants tend to react sharply to market swings and security headlines.
ETF net outflows for 2026 now total approximately $153 million. The Crypto Fear Greed Index rose to 34 from 26 on Monday, still in "Fear" territory.
Bitcoin trades near $78,321, up 1.8 percent over 24 hours.
