Eighty-two crypto protocols ceased operations in 2026, according to researcher Stacy Muur, who published a closure list Tuesday. DeFiLlama independently identified 100 shutdowns in 2026, with 40 occurring in the last 90 days.

The shuttered projects raised approximately $1 billion in aggregate funding but generated only $250 million in cumulative fees across their operational lifespans. Nine protocols had each secured over $50 million, underscoring that capital alone did not ensure viability.

Lack of product-market fit ranked as the primary shutdown driver, followed by depleted funding, insufficient revenue generation and strategic pivots. Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM and Step Finance were among the impacted protocols. Blast, the Ethereum L2 that once held over $2 billion in deposits, announced closure earlier this month, citing no viable economic path forward.

Security incidents triggered several exits. Step Finance wound down in February after a treasury breach. Radiant Capital announced a June shutdown following its failure to recover from a 2024 exploit. Coinbase-backed Satori Finance concluded operations after determining revenue could not sustain operations.

The closures reflect a concentrated funding environment. Venture investment in crypto increased in the first half of 2026 compared to the prior year, even as deal count fell 80 percent. Mergers and acquisitions totaled 87 transactions, a 65 percent increase year-over-year, signaling capital consolidation around surviving platforms.
