BWX Technologies (BWXT) reports third-quarter results after market close on November 2, and the market is pricing in weakness that does not exist.
The stock has collapsed 40 percent in six months, from a $241.82 April high to a $123.05 October 23 low. That decline reflects sector rotation out of defense and nuclear energy during AI spending fears and midterm election concerns—not operational deterioration. The reality is the opposite.
BWXT raised its fiscal 2026 revenue forecast to approximately $3.8 billion, a 19 percent increase from 2025. The company carries an $8.4 billion backlog as of June 30. Recent contract wins include a $189 million naval reactor fuel award and a fuel supply agreement with reactor startup Antares running through 2030. The U.S. Army selected BWXT as one of five vendors for its Janu program, which deploys small nuclear reactors at military bases; BWXT will construct and operate a reactor at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
This summer BWXT closed the $200 million acquisition of Precision Components Group, adding 500,000 square feet of nuclear-qualified manufacturing capacity. The deal marks the company's first major push into U.S. commercial nuclear manufacturing, a critical diversification away from its traditional defense-only footprint.
The earnings beat will likely come in Q4. Management indicated roughly 55 percent of second-half earnings will materialize in the fourth quarter, so Q3 headline numbers may look lighter than Q4. Watch full-year and long-term guidance instead.
The real catalyst is the 2030 target. At its most recent Investor Day, BWXT reaffirmed 2026 guidance and established a $5.5 billion to $6 billion 2030 revenue target. To hit that, the company must grow beyond its existing backlog through naval propulsion, additional reactor programs, and strategic acquisitions. The commercial business, which manufactures heavy steam generators and reactor pressure vessels for nuclear power plants, currently represents 30 percent of revenue and is growing faster than the defense segment—watch margin trends on the call.
At current valuations, BWXT trades at a steep discount to peers despite a $8.4 billion backlog, a visible 2030 roadmap, and near-term earnings inflection into Q4. Defense spending remains structural; nuclear energy demand is accelerating. The stock disconnect is a buying opportunity for conviction holders with a two-to-three year horizon.
