ATHENS

Greek authorities arrested three suspects Wednesday in connection with an explosion that killed six people in Athens. The blast occurred Monday evening in a densely populated residential area, leveling a three-story building and damaging adjacent structures. Police opened a murder investigation immediately.

The three individuals were detained after a two-day search involving local police and national security forces. Officials have not released their identities or specified charges. However, sources within the Hellenic Police indicated the arrests are linked to evidence recovered from the blast site, suggesting a deliberate act rather than an accident.

Investigators are examining the nature of the explosion, which rescue teams initially suspected could be gas-related before the murder inquiry began. Emergency services worked for over 36 hours to recover six bodies, including two children aged seven and nine. Forensic teams are processing the scene to determine the explosive material used and its origin.

Authorities are examining surveillance footage from surrounding blocks and interviewing dozens of witnesses who reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a flash of light before the collapse.

The explosion has prompted a response from Athens city officials, with temporary housing and support services provided for more than 50 displaced residents. Engineers are assessing the structural integrity of over a dozen neighboring buildings to ensure public safety. The public prosecutor's office is expected to present the three suspects before a magistrate within 48 hours, where formal charges will be outlined and the judicial process initiated.
