ExxonMobil Holdings Corp. expanded its ownership stake in Mozambique's Rovuma liquefied natural gas project through an asset swap with Eni SpA.

The transaction strengthens ExxonMobil's direct participation in Rovuma Basin Area 4, which holds an estimated 85 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves. The swap consolidates ExxonMobil's position within one of Africa's largest gas discoveries.

Under the deal structure, ExxonMobil gains greater control over future cash flows and operational input from the Rovuma LNG initiative. The project is designed to develop the Mamba gas fields and construct onshore liquefaction facilities to export processed LNG to global markets.

For Eni, the Italian energy company's reduced stake reflects a strategic portfolio rebalancing aligned with its capital priorities. Asset swaps between major operators typically signal a shift in risk tolerance or allocation of development capital toward higher-return projects elsewhere.
