Brazil's largest private bank, Itaú Unibanco, has launched formalized crypto trading and custody services for its clients, becoming the first financial institution in the nation to operate under new central bank regulations. The initial offering includes 15 digital assets, providing a direct institutional on-ramp into the market.

The asset selection reflects a diversified strategy beyond just Bitcoin and Ethereum. Solana, XRP, Chainlink, Litecoin, Avalanche, Polygon, and Bitcoin Cash give clients access to Layer 1 ecosystems, payment protocols, and infrastructure plays. Itaú also listed DeFi protocols Aave and Uniswap, Layer 2 solutions Optimism and Arbitrum, stablecoin USDC, and gold-backed PAXG.

Brazil's central bank rules provide the regulatory clarity that has stalled institutional adoption elsewhere. Itaú's entry creates a regulated banking channel for high-net-worth individuals and corporate treasuries seeking crypto exposure, likely unlocking significant capital flows and boosting liquidity for the listed assets.

The move establishes an operational blueprint for other major Brazilian financial institutions. Analysts expect competitors to accelerate their own crypto offerings to capture market share.
