U.S. Representative David Valadao said federal immigration enforcement has gone too far in some instances, according to a question-and-answer session with the Sacramento Bee.
When asked directly whether authorities had overstepped, Valadao replied, "In some cases, yes." The comment puts distance between him and many Republicans in Congress, who generally back stricter border security and increased enforcement.
Valadao represents California's 22nd Congressional District, a politically competitive area in the Central Valley with a significant Latino population and heavy reliance on agricultural labor. One of only seven Republicans holding California seats despite Trump's 2024 victory there, Valadao has faced tough re-election battles.
His record reflects a willingness to depart from the party line. In 2021, he voted to impeach then-President Trump—a decision that drew internal party criticism.
His comments on immigration enforcement could appeal to moderate voters and immigrant communities in his district, but risk alienating the Republican base that prioritizes aggressive enforcement.
