Akre Capital Management, in its third-quarter 2026 investor letter for the Akre Focus ETF, highlighted Visa Inc. as a core holding, emphasizing the company's role as critical infrastructure in global commerce.

Akre argues that Visa and Mastercard occupy an unassailable position at the nexus of payment flows. AI-powered agentic commerce will require the orchestration capabilities only these networks can provide. Quantum computing will eventually demand similar network control, according to Akre's thesis.

The firm contends competitors are compelled to partner with Visa and Mastercard rather than challenge them directly. Both companies continue to innovate in ways that extend their competitive moat.

Tokenization exemplifies this. The technology protects live payment credentials using unique tokenized credentials for transactions, reducing fraud and boosting authorization rates. Over 50 percent of global e-commerce transactions now use tokenization, resulting in a 39 percent reduction in fraud and a 5 percent uplift in authorization rates.

Akre points out that Visa and Mastercard began monetizing tokenization a decade after its introduction—signaling a long runway for revenue generation from established innovations that the market has yet to fully price in.

The Akre Focus ETF itself struggled in Q3 2026, falling 0.84 percent against a 2.30 percent gain for the S&P 500. A 14.38 percent decline in September erased strong July and August returns. The fund's trailing 12-month return stands at minus 21.80 percent versus plus 15.74 percent for the S&P 500.

Despite underperformance, Akre maintains conviction in its holdings. The firm projects its portfolio companies—including Visa—will deliver mid-teens free-cash-flow growth, over 43 percent return on invested capital and lower leverage than the S&P 500 index.

Visa's stock drew significant hedge fund interest. At the end of the second quarter, 194 hedge fund portfolios held positions in Visa, up from 181 in the prior quarter. Visa closed at $407.92 per share on Oct. 23, 2026, giving the company a market capitalization of $761.61 billion. The stock posted a one-month return of 9.80 percent and gained 16.08 percent over the past 52 weeks.
