Switzerland's financial regulator FINMA approved the country's first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for retail investors. BIT Asset Management's Bitcoin Fund ETF (BBIT) will begin trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange in November.

FINMA's decision represents a material shift in the regulator's stance. It previously approved only funds investing in baskets of cryptocurrencies since 2021. FINMA cited Bitcoin's established trading history and trading volume as sufficient indicators of market maturity for a single-asset vehicle.

BBIT is structured as a Swiss collective investment scheme rather than the debt-instrument format that dominates European Bitcoin products. This framework ring-fences investor assets separately from the fund manager's holdings, eliminating issuer risk—a key vulnerability in exchange-traded products (ETPs) that currently dominate the European market.

The structure places BBIT under Switzerland's "other funds for alternative investments" category. FINMA acknowledged this carries elevated risk, a standard designation for alternative investment vehicles.

FINMA emphasized Bitcoin remains highly volatile even within a regulated ETF wrap. The public offering is restricted to Switzerland.

Multiple other fund providers have already submitted Bitcoin ETF applications to FINMA, signaling accelerating product development in the Swiss market.
