Anthropic, the artificial intelligence research company, is expected to go public this year at a valuation that could reach $2 trillion. The company's latest private market valuation stands at $965 billion, already translating into substantial paper gains for its venture capital and early investors.

The valuation jump reflects aggressive capital allocation into frontier AI models, but the math raises a critical question: Does the IPO target require Claude to achieve revenue and margins that justify a 2x premium over current private pricing?

Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, invested in Anthropic's Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at $461 million. Schmidt now owns approximately 1 percent of the company, a stake valued at nearly $10 billion at the current private valuation.

Spark Capital, the only VC firm with a board seat at Anthropic, committed $75 million during the 2023 Series C round at a $5 billion valuation. Spark's position is now valued at $7 billion, a roughly 90-fold return on that check.

Coatue first backed Anthropic in 2025 at a $183 billion valuation, then co-led the last two funding rounds with a total deployment of $4.75 billion. Its current stake is worth roughly $7.5 billion based on the most recent funding round price.

Iconiq made a $6 billion investment last year at the $183 billion valuation. That late-stage bet has grown to $17 billion and could double if Anthropic achieves its projected IPO valuation.

Menlo Ventures led Anthropic's Series D and has invested more than $1 billion in the company over its history. This cumulative position now commands a stake valued at $14 billion.

Sequoia Capital invested $3 billion earlier this year when Anthropic was valued at $380 billion, securing approximately 1 percent ownership. The firm has already more than doubled its initial deployment.

Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary, initially invested $35 million in Anthropic's 2023 Series C round, then added $400 million in subsequent rounds. The firm's current stake is worth billions.
