Booking Holdings (BKNG) launched Vayo in October, a new AI travel agent backed by a $100 million investment designed to personalize trip planning and organize existing bookings. The initiative represents management's confidence in AI's ability to drive bookings—yet the market has punished the stock, which fell 18.4 percent over the past year while the S&P 500 returned 17.1 percent.

The disconnect is stark. BKNG trades at 17.5 times trailing twelve-month earnings versus the S&P 500's 23.0 times. That valuation discount exists despite concrete evidence that Booking's AI investments are already delivering measurable returns on cost.

Management confirmed on its August 4 earnings call that AI-powered customer service capabilities have driven double-digit percentage declines in cost per booking—a direct hit to the bottom line. The company has also raised its expected annual cost savings to $650 million, up from $550 million previously, creating a reinvestment pool for innovation without burdening free cash flow.

But here's the critical gap: Booking has not disclosed whether Vayo or its broader AI tools are moving the needle on revenue. When an analyst pressed management on the August 4 call about whether Priceline's AI assistant improved conversion rates or bookings per customer, the company demurred, saying it was "very early" and declined to provide specific figures.

That silence is the real risk. A $100 million outlay on a new agent is trivial relative to Booking's $28.2 billion in revenue over the past four quarters—but only if the tool drives incremental bookings. Cost savings alone justify a modest multiple bump, not a re-rating. Management must prove demand lift.

Vayo launched in private beta on October 14. Booking's next earnings report comes on or around November 3. Investors should scrutinize that call for any quantitative evidence—booking volume, conversion rate improvement, customer acquisition cost gains—tied to AI. Without it, the stock's discount versus the market will likely persist. With it, BKNG could move materially higher.
