Eighty-two digital asset projects and protocols shut down in 2026, raising questions about financial viability across decentralized finance and blockchain infrastructure. Crypto researcher Stacy Muur identified the closures on X on Tuesday.
The list includes Balancer, Radiant Capital, Neon EVM and Step Finance. DeFiLlama research published in August identified 100 projects that announced shutdowns in 2026, with 40 closures occurring in the 90 days before the report.
The most commonly cited reason for shutdowns was lack of product-market fit, followed by depleted funding, insufficient revenue and strategic pivots. These closures occurred during a prolonged bear market. Bitcoin retreated from its October 2025 record above $126,000 to trade below $60,000 in early 2026, straining projects already struggling to attract users and generate revenue.
Ethereum layer-2 Blast announced its shutdown earlier this month, citing no credible path to economic viability after once attracting over $2 billion in deposits. Step Finance shut down in February following a treasury breach. Radiant Capital announced in June it would wind down operations after failing to recover from a 2024 exploit. Coinbase-backed Satori Finance ceased operations when revenue could no longer support its business model.
The shuttered projects collectively raised approximately $1 billion in funding but generated only $250 million in cumulative fees. Nine projects had each raised more than $50 million, indicating substantial backing offered no guarantee of survival.
Crypto investment activity shows increasing concentration. DeFiLlama data indicates venture funding rose in the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year, but the number of deals fell 80 percent. M&A transactions totaled 87 as of the report—65 percent higher than the previous year—suggesting consolidation within the industry.
