U.S. Treasuries are reclaiming haven status as equity weakness forces a reversal in betting against bonds.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.1 percent today, dragging the S&P 500 down 1.1 percent and triggering a visible flight to quality. Technology stocks bore the brunt: Nvidia fell 1.4 percent, Meta dropped 3.7 percent, Alphabet declined 2.5 percent, Amazon slid 1.9 percent, and Tesla retreated 2.1 percent.

The equity selloff has funneled capital into Treasuries, pushing bond prices higher and yields lower. That dynamic is now inflicting mark-to-market losses on the large short positions many investors entered 2026 holding. Those bets were constructed on the premise of persistent inflation and a higher-for-longer Fed — assumptions now under pressure.

A sustained equity rout could trigger a short squeeze across the yield curve, compressing yields further and accelerating losses for those positioned for higher rates. Duration, once a drag on long-bond investors, is now a liability for shorts.
