Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, stated on X today, October 16, that while he is supportive of blockchain progress in any country, the idea that China has unbanned crypto is not yet a reality. Zhao addressed comments regarding a Solana advertisement in Shanghai, saying he was initially happy about it as it "would open the path for others to follow. It would also indicate that 'China unbanned crypto', which would be positive news for all of us. But alas, that's not quite the case yet, it seems.". He noted that the ad was reportedly taken down within ten minutes, indicating real-time monitoring by Chinese authorities.

Zhao's clarification comes amidst significant activity in the digital asset space, with Bitcoin hitting $87,000 recently and Schwab opening direct Bitcoin and Ethereum trading to millions of retail clients. The market's Crypto Fear & Greed Index currently sits at 63, indicating a 'Greed' sentiment. Sui's Hashi also recently launched a Bitcoin collateral network with $500 million in commitments, highlighting growing institutional engagement and new use cases for Bitcoin.

Zhao's comments imply that despite the global momentum in crypto adoption and institutional interest, significant regulatory hurdles remain in major markets like China. His perspective suggests that any perceived loosening of restrictions in China should be viewed with caution, and that the path to broader crypto acceptance in the country is still far from clear. Investors may want to monitor official policy statements and enforcement actions from Chinese regulators for any definitive shifts.
