Michaël van de Poppe, founder of MN Trading and a market analyst, stated on X today, October 15, that recent drops in the cryptocurrency market are a direct consequence of investor activity in the Korean stock market. Van de Poppe observed, "Earlier this week we've seen a relatively heavy correction on the #Crypto markets as risk was unwinding from investors holding KOSPI. Now, markets are crashing again in Korea, and therefore, #Bitcoin and #Altcoins are dropping again. Doesn't have much to do with crypto itself, has everything to do with the risk that investors have while holding KOSPI."
The analyst's comments come as Bitcoin has experienced significant volatility. Recent Gokhshtein coverage noted Bitcoin dropping below $81,000, triggering $485 million in liquidations. The digital asset has also been reported as trapped below $84,000, facing seller defense, and was rejected at that level as inflation data approached. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index currently stands at 53, indicating a neutral sentiment.
Van de Poppe's view implies that the current crypto market downturn is less about internal crypto-specific factors and more about broader risk-off sentiment originating from traditional equity markets, specifically in Asia. Investors might be selling off crypto assets to cover losses or reduce exposure in other, more volatile, traditional investments. This perspective suggests that a stabilization or recovery in markets like KOSPI could precede a rebound in digital assets.
