Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the protocol's maturity is evident in its capacity to progress without his direct involvement. Buterin made the comments during an Oct. 9 interview with Balaji Srinivasan at the Network State Conference 2026.

Buterin described decentralization not as a transition from one leader to zero, but from one to many. He noted that constantly being in the spotlight is draining.

Ethereum is beginning to move in this direction, shifting leadership to a broader base. Buterin specifically monitors whether individuals within the Ethereum Foundation and the wider community can independently advance the protocol, including their ability to defend core values such as security and privacy without waiting for his direct input.

For investors holding Ethereum, this matters: distributed leadership reduces key-person risk. A protocol dependent on a single figure—no matter how capable—carries governance tail risk. As Buterin steps back from day-to-day direction, the network's resilience against single points of failure strengthens, which historically supports long-term price stability and institutional confidence.

Buterin considers it a positive sign that more people are stepping up to lead without his initial prompting. As Ethereum scales and its ecosystem expands, a broader base of contributors becomes essential for sustained innovation and stability.
