Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan is calling it a "crypto spring." The label fits: large-cap digital assets surged 46.4 percent in Q3, and spot Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $6 billion in net inflows over the same period.
The numbers tell a story institutional money is finally moving. Bitcoin spot ETFs have been live since January 2024, Ethereum spot ETFs since May 2024. What matters now is velocity. On-chain data shows a steady drain from exchange wallets—institutions are moving Bitcoin into cold storage, not trading it.
The Fear & Greed Index sits at 62, firmly in greed territory. That sentiment tracks with what's happening in the spot ETF space: sustained accumulation by wealth managers and institutional funds using regulated products to build exposure.
This is not retail FOMO. This is capital deployment through compliant vehicles. The GENIUS Act, signed in 2025, established federal frameworks for stablecoin issuers and reserves. The CLARITY Act continues clarifying regulatory jurisdiction for digital assets. The regulatory tailwind is real, and institutions are moving into position.
Large-cap assets—Bitcoin and Ethereum—lead because liquidity and infrastructure matter at scale. When a $500 million fund needs to deploy, it moves the needle in BTC and ETH, not mid-caps. Capital rotation back into these foundational assets signals renewed confidence from the institutions that actually move markets.
The shift from speculation to accumulation is complete. Regulated spot ETFs lowered the friction for serious money to enter the space. That structural change is what drives price stability and sustained growth.
