Ethereum Name Service founder Nick Johnson has submitted an executable draft proposal to activate ENSv2 on mainnet. The upgrade redesigns the registry architecture to enable more flexible domain management and permissions within the.eth naming system.

If the DAO approves, new.eth registrations on the original registrar halt immediately. Existing domain holders keep renewal rights without forced migration, and names continue functioning on the current system during the transition.

New registrations will pause for several hours during the upgrade window as domain records synchronize to the new system. No new.eth registrations process on either version until synchronization completes.

ENS Labs will transfer remaining administrative control of the upgraded contracts to the DAO post-activation, aligning with the protocol's decentralized governance model and giving the community direct oversight of critical infrastructure.

Current.eth owners are not required to migrate. ENS Labs has reserved existing names for their owners on the upgraded system, allowing users to transition at their own pace.

The proposal needs advancement to an onchain DAO vote. Under ENS governance rules, executable proposals require at least 1 percent voter participation—1 million ENS votes—and majority approval during a seven-day voting window. If approved, a minimum two-day timelock precedes execution. No voting date has been announced.
