Digital asset markets are losing crucial capital flow support. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $679 million in net outflows last week—the largest weekly total since late June. Ethereum ETFs bled $542 million, combining for a $1.22 billion exodus that signals a sharp reversal in institutional positioning.
The selling coincided with price action: Bitcoin dropped 3.2 percent and Ethereum fell 7.0 percent. According to Wintermute's analysis, the outflows mark a stark divergence from equities, which continue to benefit from strong earnings expectations.
Wintermute identified two conditions required for a sustained crypto recovery: long-term Treasury yields must stabilize, and spot ETF flows must reverse to positive territory. Until those flip, Bitcoin faces heightened volatility and further downside risk.
The firm flagged two critical market thresholds to watch. If the U.S. 30-year Treasury yield breaches 5.64 percent, sustained higher rates will pressure digital assets. If Bitcoin repeatedly fails to break above $82,500—a key technical and psychological barrier—upside momentum will stall.
Wintermute also cautioned against chasing rallies in low-quality altcoins during periods of broader market weakness, advising a measured strategy for speculative assets. The firm maintains a constructive long-term outlook on crypto while adopting a more defensive tactical stance until macro conditions improve.
