Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella today announced a major strategic shift, revealing the company's expanding commitment to its proprietary AI silicon. Posting on X at 13:03 UTC, Nadella stated, "Today we are announcing our biggest bet yet on our own silicon. Starting next calendar year, we will scale our Maia family to multi-gigawatt deployments, making it the primary inference system for our own product and services. And we’re introducing Maia 300, which delivers 40% more tokens per watt compared to leading GPU-based systems. We are already deploying Maia 200 across the US, Europe, and Australia, delivering up to 1.7x more tokens per watt across experiences in Teams and Copilot. Our goal is to build on the full-stack efficiency gains we’ve already seen, while continuing to bring the latest innovations from across the ecosystem into our fleet."

This announcement comes as the AI infrastructure race intensifies, with major tech companies vying for control over essential computing power. Recent coverage highlighted Tencent's $5 billion chip investment and the strong performance of AI infrastructure providers like CoreWeave and Cerebras. The demand for AI chips is also impacting the broader tech market, contributing to a reported 21% drop in PC shipments as chip production prioritizes AI applications. Microsoft shares are up 2.4% today, trading at $535.07.

Nadella's statement implies a significant scaling of Microsoft's internal AI capabilities, potentially reducing reliance on external GPU providers and optimizing its own product suite. The focus on power efficiency with Maia 300 and the broad deployment of Maia 200 suggest a move towards greater cost control and performance optimization for Microsoft's AI-driven services. This strategy could reshape the competitive landscape for AI chip manufacturers and cloud service providers.
