Bitcoin and ether order books have rebuilt substantially since the October 2025 flash crash that liquidated over $19 billion in leveraged positions. Altcoins and spot trading volumes tell a different story—continued capital erosion across the board.

On Oct. 7, bitcoin's market depth within one percent of its price reached $11.7 million across major centralized exchanges. That is a 75 percent increase from crash-day depth one year earlier and above the $9 million recorded at the start of 2025.

The improved depth reflects genuine capital deployment, not just a price artifact. Bitcoin trades at roughly one-third its pre-crash value, meaning the higher dollar-denominated depth signals direct increases in capital deployed by market makers.

Most of this liquidity concentrates tight to price, where market makers actively quote. At five percent from spot, bitcoin depth holds around $24 million—consistent with January 2025.

Ether's recovery is shar. Depth within 0.5 percent of price has more than doubled since the crash, reaching about $4.2 million. The one percent depth band climbed roughly 75 percent to $5.3 million, exceeding both January 2025 and January 2026 readings.

This deepening represents real capital and genuine market maker confidence in major assets.

The rebuilt order books faced an early test this week. Bitcoin's one percent depth dropped about 12 percent between Oct. 7 and Oct. 8. Over the same period, ether's tightest liquidity band thinned slightly, though orders further from price increased.

Altcoins paint the opposite picture. Dollar depth for an altcoin basket peaked Jan. 1, 2025, and has declined on each subsequent measurement. Depth at five percent from price is down roughly one-third since early 2025, sitting around $2 million. Depth within one percent has fallen about one-sixth over the same period. Token-unit depth peaked Jan. 1, 2025, and has eased modestly—a decline driven primarily by falling prices rather than fresh capital inflows.

Spot trading volumes on centralized exchanges remain depressed. Weekly spot volume averaged around $279 billion over the four weeks leading up to Sept. 27, well below the October 2025 peak.
