Bitcoin-denominated life insurer Meanwhile secured $37.5 million in new funding, with Bain Capital Crypto leading the round. The capital injection pushes total funding to $180 million, the company said Oct. 8.

Existing investors also participated, including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and former Stripe executive Lachy Groom led one of Meanwhile's two seed rounds in 2023, which raised $19 million.

The firm is capitalizing on surging international demand for bitcoin-denominated life insurance products, particularly across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Meanwhile launched its BTC Life 1-Pay product in early 2026 for high-net-worth clients outside the United States. Policyholders pay a single bitcoin premium to secure a guaranteed lifetime death benefit denominated in bitcoin. Policy values grow directly in bitcoin. After the first year, policyholders can borrow up to 90 percent of the policy's cash value with no repayment schedule and no margin call risk—liquidity without forced liquidation.

The product complements Meanwhile's U.S.-focused BTC 10-Pay offering. BTC Life 1-Pay policies can be held by individuals, trusts, or corporate entities, making them a tool for cross-border succession and estate planning.

Since launching BTC Life 1-Pay, Meanwhile has established partnerships with 15 international brokers serving affluent families. Partners include Lioner, an advisory firm in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich, and Apeiron Group.

"Digital assets are moving into the mainstream of wealth planning," said Giorgio Jeni, partner and head of Switzerland at Lioner. "As bitcoin and other digital assets become part of the wealth landscape, high-net-worth individuals with international interests are thinking more broadly about how they manage wealth for the future."

Justin Man, CEO of Apeiron Group, said high-net-worth clients are now asking "how to plan around" bitcoin and digital assets and "ultimately transfer that wealth to the next generation. Meanwhile is the first insurance carrier to pioneer this space and has made a serious investment in serving high-net-worth clients."

Meanwhile co-founder Zac Townsend said, "Wealthy families around the world already hold bitcoin. What they haven't had is a regulated way to pass it on." The company aims to double its 2026 underwriting income, focusing on growth across Asia, Europe, and the United Arab Emirates.
