Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, called current smart contracts "pretty dumb" during a presentation at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, citing their computational limitations and complete transparency.
He introduced Night Frame, a privacy and computation framework built on Midnight, Cardano's privacy-focused sidechain. The stack combines three cryptographic technologies: zero-knowledge proofs enable proving a statement's truth without revealing underlying data; Multi-Party Computation allows multiple parties to jointly compute a function while keeping inputs confidential; Trusted Execution Environments create isolated processor areas that protect code and data from external interference, even from privileged software.
The integration addresses a core constraint of public blockchains—the inability to perform complex computations while keeping data private. Night Frame allows dApps to execute operations off-chain or in privacy-preserved layers, preserving the security guarantees of on-chain settlement without broadcasting all intermediate data on-ledger.
For Cardano holders and dApp developers, Night Frame targets use cases currently impossible on transparent blockchains: confidential financial agreements, private identity verification, and enterprise applications requiring data protection. Hoskinson positioned it as essential infrastructure for the next generation of decentralized applications.
