Coinbase completed its integration with derivatives exchange Deribit, opening a regulated pathway for eligible U.S. institutions to global crypto derivatives markets. The integration was announced Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Eligible U.S. clients can now access Deribit's options and perpetual futures through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets—the exchange's CFTC-regulated derivatives unit. On Oct. 1, all balances and positions from the Coinbase International Exchange migrated to Deribit, consolidating the operational framework.

Crypto derivatives represent approximately 80 percent of global crypto trading volume. Historically, U.S. traders lacked a regulated route to these deep offshore options and perpetual futures markets, forcing institutional clients to establish separate offshore entities and maintain parallel trading infrastructure.

The CFTC issued guidance in May specifically authorizing Coinbase Financial Markets to connect U.S. clients to global derivatives markets. That clearance made this integration possible.

Options through Coinbase Prime will be available to institutions in the coming weeks. Non-U.S. retail traders will get options access shortly after. U.S. retail clients will gain access later this year.

The move gives U.S. capital direct, regulated access to a substantial portion of global crypto trading—eliminating the operational friction and complexity that previously locked American investors out of these markets.
