OpenAI is integrating display advertisements into ChatGPT, with ads appearing alongside user-generated images. The rollout begins this month in the U.S. with global expansion planned.
The ads will be clearly labeled and will not influence ChatGPT's responses, OpenAI said. An initial group of advertisers will participate in the test.
This marks OpenAI's second major ad push this year. The company introduced ads to free and low-cost tiers earlier and expanded to India in August. The play is deliberate: introducing friction in the free experience to drive conversions to paid tiers while capturing ad revenue from users who don't upgrade.
OpenAI has assembled a partner ecosystem to make the ad product competitive. Click attribution will run through AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin. Full-funnel measurement comes via Fospha, Measured, and INCRMNTAL. Geographic targeting relies on Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic. Brand safety partnerships with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will let advertisers audit their own placements.
The move reflects a broader shift at OpenAI: beyond selling API access and enterprise licenses, the company is building a consumer ad business. With 1.2 billion weekly users, ChatGPT now has the scale that makes display inventory valuable to advertisers.
Competition is tightening. Meta launched Muse, a free agentic AI tool that competes directly with ChatGPT and positions ads as a core revenue lever across its consumer AI offerings.
