Amazon is slashing $80 off the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition to $169.99 during its October Prime Day event, positioning the previous generation device as a clearance play ahead of a new lineup launch.

The move is transparent: Amazon unveiled a redesigned aluminum-backed Paperwhite Signature in Seaglass Green priced at $249.99 shipping October 28. By markedly discounting the older 2024 model, Amazon is clearing inventory while funneling price-sensitive buyers to either the clearance tier or the premium new version.

The timing also follows August price increases across the Kindle portfolio, which Amazon blamed on higher memory and storage costs. The standard 16GB Paperwhite rose from $159.99 to $199.99 — now discounted to $149.99 for Prime Day. The Signature Edition's current price lands $30 below the standard model's new list price, an inversion that uses the discount to justify the premium tier's prior feature set.

The 2024 Signature Edition differentiates on specs: 32GB storage (versus 16GB), an ad-free lock screen, auto-adjusting front light, and 10W Qi charging. Both tiers share a 7-inch, 300ppi E Ink display and IPX8 waterproofing. The Signature claims 25 percent faster page turns than 2021 models.

Amazon's October Prime Day runs October 6-7.
