OpenAI is testing visual advertisements within ChatGPT's image generation feature this month, starting with a limited group of U.S. advertisers.
The new format gives advertisers more space to showcase products visually than previous ad placements. Ads will be clearly labeled and positioned separately from AI-generated images, showing product usage, service ideas or brand experiences.
OpenAI says advertising will not influence ChatGPT's outputs. Sponsored images will remain distinct from the AI's responses, ensuring ads do not alter generated content or chatbot answers.
The move reflects OpenAI's strategy to diversify revenue beyond paid subscriptions. With ChatGPT reaching 1.2 billion weekly users, advertising addresses a core business challenge: monetizing a free product at massive scale without compromising user experience.
To strengthen advertiser ROI, OpenAI integrated with data platforms Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, allowing advertisers to send conversion data from existing systems directly to ChatGPT Ads. The company also partnered with attribution firms AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale and Kochava to help businesses track clicks, conversions and campaign performance.
OpenAI is implementing placement safeguards to prevent ads from appearing alongside sensitive conversations. The company enlisted DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to independently assess brand suitability without accessing users' private conversations.
The test is limited to the U.S. with no announced timeline for international expansion.
