Fiserv's digital asset platform is now live, processing Roughrider Coin transactions on Solana. The deployment integrates Solana into the settlement workflow of more than 90 banks and credit unions across North Dakota, allowing these institutions to move money between them in seconds.
Roughrider Coin is a dollar-backed stablecoin issued for the state-owned Bank of North Dakota. Fiserv announced the platform's go-live on Oct. 1, 2026, designating Roughrider Coin as its first live use case. VersaBank, the Canadian bank that issues the coin, confirmed its live status in a separate Oct. 1 release.
The stablecoin's operation involves four distinct parties. The Bank of North Dakota sponsors Roughrider Coin, while Fiserv supplies the platform and banking front end. VersaBank handles issuance through its U.S. subsidiary, VersaBank USA, N.A. using its proprietary Real Bank Tokenized Deposits technology. Fireblocks provides digital asset infrastructure and tokenization services. Solana serves as the underlying ledger for settlement.
VersaBank mints new coins when dollars enter the system and burns them when dollars exit, managing the reserve assets that back the stablecoin.
A key design choice for adoption is the front end. Fiserv integrated Roughrider Coin directly into Commercial Center, its existing commercial online banking system, allowing participating banks and credit unions to access the coin through familiar screens without needing separate wallet or custody setups. This integration enabled the rapid onboarding of more than 90 institutions onto the same settlement rail on day one.
The Bank of North Dakota, chartered in 1919, remains the nation's only state-owned bank. Don Morgan, the bank's CEO, said launching Roughrider Coin provides partner community banks and credit unions a new tool for efficient money movement across the state's interbank network.
RoughRider Coin is the initial live application for Fiserv's broader Digital Asset Platform. The platform supports additional use cases including stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable commerce, treasury automation, tokenized deposits and global currency account services.
