European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde announced Friday that the institution is inviting online shops to participate in the digital euro's pilot exercise in 2027. Lagarde stated on X, "Payment service providers give us valuable feedback on customer expectations and retailer needs for the digital euro. To see how it could work in practice, we're now also inviting online shops to join our pilot exercise in 2027. Applications are open until 27 October." This step aims to gather practical insights into the digital currency's functionality.

The ECB's move comes as central banks globally continue to explore central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). While the digital euro project progresses, other major central banks face different challenges. Recent Gokhshtein coverage reported that the Federal Reserve Vice Chair indicated a delay in rate hikes. Strong Q2 growth and sticky core inflation have kept the Fed on hold through year-end. The Reserve Bank of India also recently executed a $136 billion swap to manage liquidity, signaling potential rate hike risks.

Lagarde's invitation indicates the digital euro project is moving towards practical implementation and user feedback. By involving online shops, the ECB aims to test the digital currency's real-world applicability in e-commerce, which is crucial for its potential adoption. This phase suggests the ECB is focused on understanding consumer and retailer needs to ensure the digital euro can function as an effective payment method.
