Bitcoin derivatives activity accelerated this week, with open interest rising by 27,000 BTC since Sept. 30. This increase, valued at $2.3 billion, pushed the total outstanding futures and perpetual contracts to approximately 653,000 BTC, up from 626,000 BTC, according to CoinGlass data.
The surge in open interest coincided with Bitcoin's price climbing from around $83,500 to $86,500 over the same period. The current spot price stands at $86,428, marking a 3.0 percent gain in the last 24 hours. New capital is flowing into bullish positions, underpinning the rally.
Perpetual funding rates jumped from approximately 3 percent to 10 percent within the same timeframe. Funding rates are periodic payments between long and short traders, designed to keep perpetual futures prices aligned with the spot price. A positive funding rate means long position holders pay short position holders.
The sharp rise in funding rates signals stronger demand for bullish exposure. Traders are willing to pay a higher premium to maintain their long positions, especially ahead of Friday's U.S. jobs report, reflecting conviction in further price appreciation.
The open interest figure of 625,000 BTC at the close of September was near its lowest level in the past 12 months. The current recovery in speculative activity builds from a comparatively low base, indicating a rebound from depressed levels.
Higher funding rates also increase the cost for traders holding leveraged long positions. This elevated cost exposes these traders to greater vulnerability if a sudden price reversal occurs, potentially triggering liquidations.
Crypto-linked equities responded positively in premarket trading. MicroStrategy, the largest corporate holder of bitcoin, saw its shares rise around 3 percent. Coinbase and Robinhood each climbed about 2 percent, reflecting broader market optimism.
Tether's $190 billion USDT stablecoin is set to return to the Bitcoin network this month, enhancing liquidity and utility for the leading stablecoin on Bitcoin over a decade after its initial debut there.
