The Base Layer 2 network deployed its Cobalt upgrade on Sept. 30, 2026, introducing native support for conditional transactions and standardizing B20 asset functionality across its ecosystem. This marks Base's third major mainnet upgrade since launch.
Conditional transactions allow smart contracts to execute complex transfers and settlements only when predefined on-chain parameters are met—enabling automated escrow, liquidations, and multi-leg swaps without external oracles. The feature reduces operational latency for developers building derivatives and lending protocols on Base.
The upgrade also standardizes B20 asset interfaces, improving interoperability for tokens and liquidity pools native to Base's decentralized finance protocols. Standardized token representations reduce fragmentation across applications and lower integration costs for projects migrating to the network.
Binance paused deposits and withdrawals on Base at 18:00 UTC on Sept. 30 ahead of the mandatory hard fork, with the maintenance window closing at 20:00 UTC. Network validators, dApp developers, and liquidity providers were required to update RPC nodes and integrate new libraries to access the upgrade's features.
Base competes directly with Arbitrum, Optimism, and Polygon in the Ethereum scaling hierarchy. Conditional transaction support addresses a structural gap in existing Layer 2 frameworks—one that had previously required bridge abstraction or custom middleware. Whether developers adopt the feature depends on integration friction and relative gas savings versus competing networks.
