SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT's capabilities, allowing developers to build app-like experiences directly within the AI model. The company announced these new plugin extensions at its Dev Day presentation Tuesday, marking a strategic shift beyond its conversational AI origins.

These extensions provide applications with a dedicated home in the ChatGPT sidebar, a departure from existing plugins that connect ChatGPT to external tools such as Slack, SharePoint, Airtable and Google Drive. Developers can now build interactive panels, allowing users to work with their tools while chatting with ChatGPT.

The new interface incorporates file viewers, which support specific file formats used by a developer's product. This integration creates a more interactive user experience within the ChatGPT environment.

OpenAI is streamlining the development and discovery process for plugins. A new Plugin Creator tool is available for developers and a redesigned submission flow for the plugin directory to provide clearer feedback.

The company has improved plugin ranking and recommendations within the directory and in conversations. Users gain granular control by approving individual access needs for each plugin.

OpenAI said ChatGPT Sites, the lightweight websites built using ChatGPT, can now host these new plugin extensions. This allows users to share their custom applications with colleagues, who can then interact with them using their own connected data and permissions.

OpenAI is adding support for the proposed MCP Events specification. This feature will enable plugins to initiate automations based on specific events occurring within a connected application, while also making these automations easier to add and manage.

This expansion positions ChatGPT as a more comprehensive enterprise platform, moving beyond its chatbot origins. The move places OpenAI in direct competition with established productivity suites and collaboration tools, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Workspace, Slack and Notion.

The strategy aims to deepen OpenAI's competitive moat by integrating ChatGPT more into daily workflows. By becoming a central hub for various applications and automations, OpenAI seeks to increase platform stickiness and capture a larger share of enterprise software spending.

OpenAI's investment in platform development reflects a strategic pivot towards the application layer of AI. This effort aims to expand its total addressable market by offering a more robust, integrated ecosystem for developers and businesses.

The new tools and improved discovery mechanisms are designed to incentivize developers to build on the ChatGPT platform. This could foster a new economy of AI-native applications, creating potential revenue streams for developers and solidifying OpenAI's position as a foundational layer in the enterprise AI stack.
