SAN FRANCISCO — Microsoft is expanding its Fabric data analytics and engineering platform to a significantly larger user base. The company now provides database services and app-building tools from Fabric directly to customers of its Power BI business intelligence system.
Power BI Pro and Power BI Premium Per User licensees will receive Fabric Apps and Fabric Database capabilities, including security features, at no additional charge. Microso applications developed within Fabric can port to Power BI with little effort or cost.
Microsoft serves 40,000 Fabric customers. Power BI has more than 35 million monthly business users across 425,000 organizations globally. This initiative aims to use Power BI's existing reach, particularly among users of Microsoft Dynamics applications.
The company is providing this user base the ability to construct data analytics applications using Rayfin, an open-source SDK. Rayfin allows users to create data applications that accept inputs, write back data, maintain shared state and support operational workflows across Fabric.
Each application developed with Rayfin includes a 1 GB Fabric SQL database, authentication and security. As an application matures, users can expand its functionality and transition it to developers and IT teams without requiring a rebuild.
This integration of Fabric application development into Power BI suggests a diminishing distinction between dashboards and full applications, according to a Microsoft executive. Rayfin is engineered to integrate with coding agents like GitHub Copilot, Claude Code or Codex, enabling users to instruct these agents to build applications.
Microsoft is also extending its platform integrations, including with Salesforce application and data systems. The company is previewing bidirectional integration with Salesforce Data Cloud 360, which makes CRM data accessible across the Microsoft ecosystem for analytics and AI, including as business context for Fabric data agents, without data duplication. Salesforce maintains its own data environment and agent-building platform.
