Crusoe, a Denver-based AI data center builder, has terminated its $1.25 billion agreement to purchase 29 stationary power plants from Boom Supersonic. The deal involved Boom's 42-megawatt Superpower turbines, which were slated for initial deliveries in 2027.

Boom Supersonic confirmed the cancellation. The company, also based in Denver, developed the Overture supersonic passenger jet and launched a stationary power plant business last year by adapting its jet engine to burn natural gas.

Boom CEO Blake Scholl announced the termination on X on Friday, noting that Crusoe's near-term power strategy at its Abilene, Texas campus no longer relies on turbines as a primary source. "A launch partnership just didn't make sense," Scholl wrote. He added that Boom has other customers in its pipeline and plans to deliver about 250 megawatts of Superpower turbines next year to other sites, targeting one gigawatt in 2028.

Crusoe spokesperson Andrew Schmitt confirmed the decision, saying the company is staying flexible as it expands its data center portfolio. "As our portfolio grows, we stay flexible, choosing the energy solutions that are right for each site as its needs evolve — including turbines, along with wind, solar, batteries and the grid," Schmitt said.

Crusoe began in 2018 as a bitcoin miner leveraging stranded natural gas from oil fields. It has since pivoted to building AI data centers, with a major 1.2-gigawatt campus in Abilene serving OpenAI and Oracle, powered primarily by grid electricity with gas turbines for backup. The company is also constructing a 900-megawatt data center in Abilene for Microsoft designed to run on on-site gas turbines.

The cancellation represents a loss of Boom's first launch customer for its Superpower turbine business. The turbine shares approximately 80 percent of its components with Boom's Symphony engine for the Overture jet. Scholl's comments suggest Boom has secured alternative buyers, though the loss of an anchor customer underscores execution risk in the stationary power plant market.
