Lowe's has launched a drone delivery service in partnership with DoorDash and Alphabet's Wing at a store in Matthews, North Carolina, targeting a specific friction point in the home improvement shopping experience: customers who realize mid-project they need a crucial item.

The pilot offers over 100 products delivered in as little as 20 minutes. Drones carry orders weighing approximately 2.5 pounds within a 5-mile radius of the store. Customers order through the DoorDash application, where drone delivery appears as an option for eligible purchases.

"This was one of the friction points," said Seemantini Godbole, chief information and artificial intelligence officer at Lowe's. "You never left your home, you never left your job site, and then you just continued with the project."

Lowe's distinguishes itself as the first home improvement retailer to deploy drone delivery, though Amazon, Walmart, and Uber Eats already operate similar services. The company is still evaluating the pilot before considering expansion. Tech teams are stationed at the store daily gathering feedback from associates and DoorDash.

Drone operations face regulatory hurdles and public concerns about noise and privacy, particularly in densely populated areas. Lowe's is leveraging the expertise of DoorDash and Wing to meet operational and regulatory requirements.

Beyond drone delivery, Lowe's is expanding express same-day delivery options and integrating artificial intelligence into internal processes for store associates. Godbole said the company aims to make technology invisible to the customer experience: "When associates and customers are interacting with Lowe's, I really want the technology to disappear, and I want the experience to shine through."
