Austin Mayor Demands ICE Probe After Agent Shoots Man

AUSTIN

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and wounded a man in North Austin on Sunday, Sept. 20. The man sustained a gunshot wound to the torso and was hospitalized.

Austin Mayor Kirk Watson condemned the shooting, saying he was "very angry about this" and "extremely unhappy" with what happened. He demanded a full independent investigation and the immediate release of body camera footage from the incident.

Watson also called for accountability if the ICE officer broke the law. He criticized ICE's enforcement tactics broadly, saying he was "not surprised at all" by the shooting.

The shooting occurred in the 7000 block of West Anderson Lane near U.S. 183. Video from the scene showed a damaged blue Toyota Corolla. The man was on foot during the confrontation with the federal agent.

Austin Police Chief Davis confirmed the agent involved was with ICE. A crowd gathered at the scene to protest ICE's presence and actions.

Watson's criticism drew pushback from some who accused him of politicizing the incident. The shooting remains under official investigation.
